"{The Square-fields System : The square-fields system was a kind of land ownership system adopted in the Shang and Zhou dynasties. The "square fields" refer to the farmland that was divided into patches a square - shaped fields. With boundaries outside and crisscross ditches and paths inside, the field looks like the Chinese character of "Jin" (well). The square fields were state-owned fields in name but owned by royal families and nobles in reality. They were distributed to civilians only for their use, who had to pay certain tributes in return. No sales or transfers were allowed. A square field was divided into nine square-shaped areas with the outer eight patches being private ones and the central one public.
